Paducah students learn safety, confidence |

Safe driving starts early for Paducah Middle School students, who got a taste of how to handle compromising positions with a hands-on simulation.
Students participated in three activities Wednesday to test their ability to do certain tasks while under the influence. Wayne Alexander, youth coordinator with the Kentucky Crime Prevention Coalition — an arm of the state Transportation Cabinet — said teens need to learn lessons early which could prevent needless injury. The program was paid for through a Tornado STAR Youth Service Center grant to curb alcohol and drug use.
Students wore special goggles while they attempted shooting basketballs, driving a motorized scooter course and taking a field sobriety test. Most students believed they would pass. Robert Tyler, Tornado STAR Youth coordinator, said he offered a dollar to any student who sank a basket while wearing goggles. His wallet didn’t come out at all Wednesday.
“Most students feel like they’re invincible, that anything that they can do they will get away with,” Tyler said.
Not one student passed the full course, and Tyler said it was an important lesson to learn. Students responded well to the experiment. They were excited to try, and when they realized how difficult it was, reality sank in.

Schools’ junior Beta Clubs helping others |
|
by Rebecca Feldhaus
The Paducah Sun, January 24, 2012
Used with permission.
Students at Paducah Middle and Clark Elementary schools have a new outlet for involvement.
Both schools started a junior Beta Club before the new year. Clark Elementary School fifth-graders who are on the A/B Honor Roll and receive a recommendation from a teacher can join 35 of their peers in leadership. Because the group didn’t hold its first meeting until December, club sponsors decided they could fit in just a few events before winter break.
Sharon Carvell, Clark Elementary librarian and group co-sponsor, said instead of having a Christmas party, junior Beta Club members adopted a Clark family for holiday presents and needed clothes. Kids also got a chance to put their hands to work by stuffing holiday meals bags at the Family Service Society. The society has become the unofficial focus for the club’s first year of service. Before the year’s end, Carvell said, every member of the club can volunteer at the Family Service Society again.
Becky Clark, gifted, talented and creative coordinator and junior Beta Club co-sponsor at Clark, said the club gives more students a chance to shine.
